- • Biopsy, either by fine needle aspiration (FNA) or with a regular needle, is almost always necessary. This
- procedure can be done through the skin without significant danger. Because of the variation in the tumor cells
- of different types of cancer, the biopsy sample can be used to distinguish between a primary liver cancer or a
- cancer that has spread from another organ. Occasionally, if the AFP is extremely high and the tumor very
- large, a biopsy may not be necessary.
